Location And Beaches

Mbumbulu is situated between Kosi Bay and Sodwana Bay. This makes it an ideal location for trips to the many pristine and immaculate beaches such as:

9 Mile Beach

The drive to this beach is quite a demanding 4×4 drive over the dune, separating the ocean and Lake Sibaya, but worth the drive.  Greatly recommended, it is a day trip from Mbumbulu Bushcamp. Pack your necessities such as charcoal and boerewors for the trip and spend your day exploring Lake Sybia whilst on your way to 9 Miles. 9 Miles offers a view over the ocean that can only be described as unmatched. You are encouraged to set up your gazebo for the day. During low tide, you can immerse yourself in a multitude of activities including fishing, snorkelling, spearfishing or just having an amazing time simply on the beach.

Mabibi Beach

Mabibi is one of the well-known beaches in the area and although fairly commercialised and crowded at times, it definitely deserves a visit.

Island Rock Beach

Our guests will be pleased to know that this beach is closest in proximity to the camp and is an optimal choice for someone who is looking for a fast and easy drive to the beach.

Lala Nek Beach

Lala Nek is what can only be described as a hidden gem on the Elephant coast. Not only does it serve as the location of the best fishing spot, but during low tide a massive tidal pool provides an excellent spot for snorkelling. In fact, this spot is one of the most highly rated fishing spot in South Africa.

The tropical fish species and warm water emulates the scuba diving experience closely, without oxygen of course. You will have access to your very own charter boat whereby the amazing view can be thoroughly appreciated when you are not exploring the water with your scuba gear. On a good day, this experience will offer you just as much and maybe even more than if you were to pay to go on a chartered dive.

Rocktail Bay

Outstanding for activities such as swimming and fishing. This beach is relatively quiet, allowing you to experience and enjoy it in serenity and without disturbance.

Black Rock Beach

Another fine fishing spot. With its distinct black rock in the ocean and safe swimming beach, a must go! The parking area is next to the beach with excellent braai and picnic spots.

Banga Nek

A fairly long and challenging drive from the camp, we advise that you begin your trip relatively early in the morning. The time taken at the dune whilst various people flaunt their various 4×4 skills does not make the drive any shorter. This beach is located opposite Kosi Mouth. With it being an optimal spot for fishing, guests having access to good parking right by the beach along with braai facilities, and it being a safe spot there is not much more you can ask for.

A characteristic that makes this trip even better is the fact that you drive past Lala Nek, Black Rock, Roctail beach, and Dog point which are all incredibly beautiful places that complement the route immaculately.

Dog Point

Do not be discouraged by the fact that this viewpoint over the ocean is inaccessible to the public. You will still be able to stop on the dune and admire an immaculate view with the drink of your choice. A wonderful characteristic of Dog Point is its sensitivity to turtles and marine life.

Kosi Bay Mouth

This is one of the most popular and pristine beaches in South Africa. The Kosi Bay estuary system consists of a series of interconnecting channels and four lakes (Amanzimnyama, Nhlange, Mpungwini and Makhawulani), that flow into the sandy estuary mouth before reaching the Indian Ocean. Kosi Bay is the jewel of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park World Heritage Site with Mozambique forming the northern boundary of the protected area while the Indian Ocean serves as the eastern boundary.

An extraordinary diversity of marine life make this mesmerising and unspoilt lake system their habitat. In addition, it is also home to numerous bird and animal species such as the palm-nut vulture, pels fishing owl, hippo and crocodile.

The four lakes are surrounded and bordered by wild date palms, mangrove swamps, forests of sycamore fig as well as the common raffia palm

Humpback whales are seasonal offshore visitors, while leatherback and loggerhead sea turtles head for the shores to nest in the beaches from October to February.
